About

A field guide, because the question is always "which one?"

Pewter Fern is two people who were tired of answering the same question at the same dinner table: which of these games should I actually try? A field guide answers "which one?" better than a list of reviews does, because it starts from what you already know you want.

Why the format

Reviews tell you whether something is good. A key tells you whether it is good for you, in four or five questions, and then hands you a plate that describes the thing plainly: where it lives, what it eats, what it can be confused with. We found that we remembered games better written that way, and so did the people we were recommending them to.

What is in the guide

Online games that run in a web page, with nothing to install and nothing to pay to start. Builders, farms, war games, an arena. We do not describe gambling products of any kind and we do not intend to.

How the site pays for itself

Through affiliate links on the "Open the game" buttons. If you sign up through one, the publisher may pay us a small commission. Plates are locked before links are added and no publisher sees one before publication.

Artwork

Game artwork is reproduced from the publishers' own press and promotional material to identify the game described, and belongs to them. If you hold the rights to an image and would like it removed or credited differently, write to us.

The name

A pewter fern is a grey-green fern that grows on old walls. It is unremarkable until you learn to see it, and then it is everywhere.
